Why the Loom Recliner Has Become Our Most-Sourced Piece
In the past 18 months, the Loom Recliner has become the single piece most frequently specified in hospitality procurement projects we manage — particularly for executive suites, hotel lounges, villa reading rooms, and resort beachside pavilions.
This is unusual for a bespoke piece. Hospitality procurement typically favours predictable, brand-warranted seating. The Loom Recliner is neither: it is a custom-commissioned chair from a single Chiang Rai weaving family, available only through Thai Sourcing Agent.
It has been specified anyway because the procurement math works. A high-spec lounge chair from a Bangkok luxury showroom runs ฿180,000–280,000. The Loom Recliner — a more distinctive piece, fully customisable — runs ฿78,000–92,000 depending on finish.
This guide is the procurement reference for buyers, project managers, and FF&E consultants evaluating the Loom Recliner for their projects.
What the Chair Is
The Loom Recliner is a high-back lounge chair with a recline function built into the woven seat tension — no mechanical recline mechanism, no moving parts. The chair responds to weight and position through the material itself.
The frame is northern teak, hand-jointed without adhesive. The loom work is done by the third generation of a Chiang Rai weaving family that has been producing on traditional floor looms for over sixty years. The seat geometry — depth, lumbar offset, armrest angle — was developed through prototype testing over eighteen months.
For the design and development story, see our piece on the Korean-Thai design dialogue.
Full Technical Specifications
For procurement specification sheets and FF&E databases, the complete specifications:
Frame
- Wood species: Northern Thai teak (Tectona grandis)
- Joinery: mortise-and-tenon throughout, no adhesive
- Frame weight: 9.6 kg (frame only, before weave)
- Total weight: 12.4 kg
- Frame finish options: oiled (Natural), smoke-treated (Smoked), ebonised (Ebonised)
Woven Seat and Back
- Material: hand-loomed natural cotton with structural fibre core
- Loom: traditional floor looms, Chiang Rai workshop
- Tension grading: variable density across panel — tighter at seat front, looser at seatback, tightest at lumbar zone
- Cycle testing: 25,000 recline cycles validated; estimated 25–30 years residential use, 12–15 years hospitality use
- Hospitality fabric option: synthetic fibre weave with 15-year durability rating, available on request
Dimensions
- Overall height: 985mm
- Overall width: 740mm
- Overall depth: 880mm (neutral); 940mm (full recline)
- Seat height: 380mm
- Seat depth: 580mm
- Lumbar offset: 140mm
- Armrest height (above seat): 165mm
- Armrest angle: 12° inward inclination
Custom dimensions available for hospitality runs — typically a range of seat heights for diverse guest comfort, or scaled versions for executive-suite vs. standard-room differentiation.
Recline Behaviour
- Recline mechanism: weave-tension dynamic flex (no mechanical hinge)
- Recline range: 5–8° from neutral position
- Return: passive — chair returns to neutral when weight is released
- Held-position recline: not supported (this is dynamic flex, not held recline)
If a held-position recline is required (e.g., for elderly users or extended reading), this is the wrong chair. We can source alternative reclining seating with mechanical mechanisms.
Finish Options for Procurement Specification
Natural
Frame in oil-finished teak, golden-honey colour developing toward amber over years. Weave in unaltered natural cotton — warm, sandy, with a texture that becomes more characterful over time.
Specification code: LR-NAT Pricing: ฿78,000 (single unit)
Best for: rooms with abundant natural light, lighter wall colours, biophilic-design hospitality lounges.
Smoked
Frame treated with smoke process that deepens grain without stain. Weave takes on a cooler, more architectural quality — natural cotton becomes greyish-brown.
Specification code: LR-SMK Pricing: ฿84,000 (single unit)
Best for: contemporary hospitality interiors with concrete, steel, or stone surfaces. Pairs with industrial-design hotel lounges.
Ebonised
Frame and weave both darkened to near-black. Chair becomes a silhouette. Best understood against light walls and natural flooring — functions as a graphic element in the room.
Specification code: LR-EBO Pricing: ฿92,000 (single unit)
Best for: minimalist or design-led hospitality interiors where the chair is the dramatic focal object.
Volume Pricing for Hospitality Projects
For hospitality and commercial procurement, volume discounts apply on units of the same finish:
| Quantity | Discount | Effective unit price (Natural) | |---|---|---| | 1–4 | none | ฿78,000 | | 5–9 | 6% | ฿73,300 | | 10–19 | 10% | ฿70,200 | | 20–49 | 14% | ฿67,100 | | 50+ | 18% | ฿63,950 |
The discount reflects the atelier's preference for production-batch efficiency. A 50-unit run is materially easier to produce than 50 separate single commissions.
Lead Times
Single piece (residential commission)
- Specification + sample approval: 2 weeks
- Frame production: 4 weeks
- Loom weaving: 4 weeks (parallel with frame work)
- Assembly + finishing: 1 week
- Total production: 10 weeks from order confirmation
- Plus international freight: 3–6 weeks depending on destination
Hospitality run (10–20 units)
- Specification + sample approval: 2 weeks
- Production: 12–14 weeks
- Total production: 14–16 weeks
Hospitality run (20–50 units)
- Specification + sample approval: 2 weeks
- Production: 16–20 weeks
- Total production: 18–22 weeks
For projects with timeline constraints, we can split production across the Chiang Rai workshop's capacity to compress timelines — but quality control becomes more important, not less, when production is parallelised.
The Procurement Approval Workflow
For both single-piece commissions and hospitality runs, the workflow is:
1. Brief (Day 1)
You share: project context, finish preference, quantity, target delivery date, any custom requirements.
2. Quote (Day 2–3)
We confirm: pricing per unit, total project pricing, lead time commitment, freight estimate.
3. Material samples (Week 1–2)
We ship: teak finish samples (Natural / Smoked / Ebonised) and weave samples. You evaluate physical samples before production begins.
4. Prototype (Week 3–6, single piece only)
For single-piece commissions, we make one prototype before any further pieces are produced. You approve the prototype against your brief; production proceeds only after sign-off.
For hospitality runs, the first piece off the line serves the same function — production continues only after first-piece approval.
5. Weekly production photos (Week 3 onwards)
You receive weekly photo updates throughout production. This is your window into the workshop and your early warning system if anything is going wrong.
6. Pre-shipment inspection (Final week)
We inspect every completed unit before packing. Any unit that fails QC is replaced before shipment, at no charge.
7. Packing, documentation, freight (Week 11+)
Export packing crates, commercial invoicing, certificate of origin, CITES documentation where applicable. Freight options include FOB Bangkok (you arrange forwarding) or CIF to destination port.

When the Loom Recliner Is the Wrong Choice
Procurement honesty requires noting when this is not the right chair:
- Mass-market hotel rooms (3-star or budget): the price-per-unit is too high relative to the typical room budget
- Properties needing held-position recline: this is dynamic flex, not adjustable held recline
- Properties with severe weight requirements (per-unit guest weight >180kg): the weave tension is engineered for typical body weight; oversized loading is not warranted
- Outdoor terraces and pool-deck use: the natural cotton weave is for indoor-protected use; outdoor exposure degrades fibre
For any of these, we can recommend alternative chairs from our atelier network.
